IAEA chief says Zaporizhzhia plant stays precarious in the war

Rafael Grossi told the UN General Assembly that military activity, power losses and limited diesel backups still threaten Europe’s largest nuclear plant and its workers.

The head of the UN nuclear agency said Friday that the war in Ukraine continues to create unprecedented threats to nuclear safety, singling out the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Rafael Grossi, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, made the remarks in the agency’s annual report to the UN General Assembly. He said the plant, Europe’s largest, remains in a precarious position, with frequent power losses, limited back-up diesel supplies and military activity threatening the plant and the people who work there.

Grossi also reported that in 2025 more than 400 operating reactors in more than 30 countries produced 10 percent of global electricity and a quarter of its low-carbon electricity, and that more than 60 new reactors are under construction.
